According to the U-Multirank ranking 2017, a large majority of French universities and "grandes écoles" assessed are above global average.

"French institutions are included in the strongest group in Europe. They equal their counterparts in the UK, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany" thinks Frans Van Vught, one of the lead-partners of the ranking.

U-Multirank 2017 specifically highlights two business schools and three engineering schools (Edhec, Essec, Télécom ParisTech, Centrale Lyon and Grenoble INP).

The European ranking uses the following criteria:

  • research
  • teaching and learning
  • knowledge transfer
  • international orientation
  • regional commitment
